Christmas greetings

Mrs Gillon with the Nativity cast at Reeth School Hall - click for full size image

Autumn 2011

Our Nursery, Reception and Key Stage 1 children acted out Baboushka, an enchanting version of the Christmas Nativity story, at the school hall at Reeth and in the chapel hall at Gunnerside at the end of term. Sadly the Reeth presentation also marked the retirement of Mrs Gillon, who has been teaching at Two Dales Nursery for the past six years. Mrs Gillon will be greatly missed and we wish her all the very best.

Merry Christmas from all the staff and pupils of Reeth and Gunnerside Schools.

Autumn 2011

The self-devised motto "We hope, we dream, we believe" was the theme of an inspirational assembly presented recently over video link by our Year 6 students at Gunnerside to the rest of the school. Stemming from PSHCEE work done in class, the students had prepared a decorated banner of this motto to accompany a spoken presentation about their plans and hopes for the future.

We'll meet again ...

Mrs Bastow is presented with flowers - click for full size image

Autumn 2011

We were very sorry to lose one of our longest-standing members of staff this term. Mrs Bastow has, since half term, been in post as acting headteacher at Ainderby Steeple, Morton on Swale. Their gain is, sadly, our loss and while we cannot rule out her return to Reeth and Gunnerside Schools, we are happy to wish Mrs Bastow all the very best in her new role. She has made an enormous contribution during her time at Reeth and Gunnerside Schools – as part of our Senior Leadership Team, teaching in KS2 as well as KS1, taking on a year of acting headship among other challenging roles – and we are sure you will join us in thanking her for the commitment she has made to our schools.

Mrs Simpson is presented with her 'cook's emergency kit' - click for full size image

Autumn 2011

Further sad news this term, for us, is that school cook Mrs Simpson has also picked up sticks and followed her career path to pastures new. However, she has not forsaken the dale completely and may yet return in her new capacity as relief cook. Mrs Simpson has made a massive contribution to school life over the years, not only directly at Reeth and Gunnerside Schools, but also by providing meals for Arkengarthdale School, and through her much-lauded contribution on a countywide basis with her work for County Caterers. Haste ye back!

Early in the new term, Gunnerside played host to a visit from another school from the region – The Northern School of Contemporary Music. After a pacy introduction and drum session from Stuie Ellerton, the NSCM's director, our Y5 and Y6 students were further delighted by demonstrations and workshops with guitar, vocal and breakdance tutors. Friday music lessons will not be the same again!

Y3/4 maypole dancing with Mrs Metcalfe's cake in foreground - click for full size image
Summer 2011
Our schools marked the recent royal wedding with our own special ceremony in the orchard garden at Hudson House in Reeth. We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day and Reverend Caroline presided over a charming "wedding" between a William and Kate selected from our KS1 class. As well as maypole dancing from Y3/4 and an African dance from Y5/6, there was a presentation by Mrs Cork to the winner of our wedding cake competition. The successful design was turned into a stunning cake by Mrs Metcalfe – our thanks for that. Our thanks also went to Mrs Allison, whom Mrs Cork presented with a long-service award from County. Well done, Mrs A!

Ensemble playing

Rehearsing in advance - click for full size image
Spring 2011
Years 3/4 and 5/6 played their own part in the production of a piece of Cool Jazz at music workshops held on both school sites by the Keld Ensemble in April. Our class groups had rehearsed, with the help of Mrs Allison, in advance of the visit by the group. Our visitors were very impressed with the children's performances – and we were all just as taken with the Keld Ensemble! (Look out, and listen, for the result on our e-learning platform soon.)

Red Nose Day 2011

Cruella and one of several Elvises in school on the day - click for full size image
Spring 2011
Our children really went the distance to raise money for Red Nose Day in school this year – between them, the pupils of KS2 ran the distance to the 2012 Olympic stadium, 260 miles! Pupils did the sponsored run, measured in 25m lengths, over the course of the school week in the run up (pun intended) to Red Nose Day. The final total of sponsorship donations for the Olympic-distance run was the amazing sum of £753.03! Well done, Reeth and Gunnerside runners! Staff and children at both sites paid for the privilege of dressing up for the day, and Mr Price and the Y5/6s also organised a fun afternoon for us at Gunnerside, with stalls and activities, and the finals of our talent show. Mr Price even took a soaking in the stocks for the good cause. These attractions along with the sale of red noses raised £118. Our thanks and congratulations go to everyone at school for their efforts, and to parents and the community, who helped make the day such a success. Congratulations, too, to the KS1 star who wowed the audience and took the talent-show prize with his knockout performance!

Spring 2011
Our schools were winners again at the recent Scott Trial charity presentation, with a generous donation both to the schools and to the Friends of the Schools. On top of this, a further donation was made to the Two Dales Nursery, taking the grand total well past the magnificent sum of £1,000! As ever, our heartfelt thanks go to the Richmond Motor Club and the Scott Trial, who this year presented more than £7,000 to schools and good causes in the community.

Spring 2011
We are pleased to announce that Parent Pay was successfully launched from Monday 28th February. Electronic payments via ParentPay are now our preferred method of making payments to school for school dinners and trips.
Using the secure ParentPay website, you are able to pay online by credit or debit card for dinner money and trips; we hope to make other types of payments possible shortly, eg Nursery fees. All parents who activate their ParentPay account between 18th February and the end of March 2011 will be entered into a lucky draw with three winners each winning a week's school dinners for one child for free (do the maths – that's five meals, so worth £10.50!) Full details of our new online payment service can be found in the ParentPay section of this website. Click through the ParentPay link in the navigation sidebar on the left for more information.

Celebrating achievement

Miss Bainbridge – HLTA! - click for full size image
Spring 2011
Monday is our day for celebrating achievement at our whole-school assembly, when we add up the points and cheer for the house that has earned the most. Each class also announces its Star of the Week. We were very pleased this week, therefore, to be able to applaud the successes of two members of staff as well as students. Miss Bainbridge recently attained the status of Higher Level Teaching Assistant, and this was marked by a presentation from Mrs Cork at our Monday achievement assembly. For her central role in producing the definitive Recipe Book for County Caterers, Mrs Simpson, our school cook, was rightly feted by a visit from Cynthia Welbourn, head of County's CYPS – as well as Herbie Carrot and photographer! Mrs Welbourn and her entourage were treated to a lunch of one of Mrs Simpson's specials, a Valentine's Day Mediterranean pasta dish. Lovely!

Spring 2011
Our Year 4 students are very lucky to be taking part in the Wider Opportunities Programme, a national scheme which makes a musical instrument available to students for the course of the academic year. In keeping with the musical traditions of our community, the children from our schools, along with the Year 4s from Arkengarthdale School, are all learning brass instruments at a weekly session held at Reeth School. There's no pressure on the children to prove themselves the next James Shepherd or Wynton Marsalis – the intention is simply that they enjoy developing their own musicality. And enjoy, as Mr Cobb, our peripatetic bandleader, will confirm, is proving to be the right word!

Mrs Shirley Coates is leaving the staff of our schools this Christmas. We will all really miss her, and with 22 years of service as an MSA behind her, she will have been a friendly familiar face not only to the children at school now, but to a couple of generations of local schoolchildren. Mrs Cork made a video-link card and gift presentation to Mrs Coates on behalf of the staff and pupils, while Mrs Simpson prepared a wonderful spread of biscuits as a tribute and lunchtime treat. We are sure our sad loss will be her grandson's happy gain. All the very best, Mrs Coates!
